"Away in a Manger" was first published in an 1885 Lutheran Sunday School book by James R. Murray, but the author of the first two stanzas is unknown. The tune of this version is that most commonly used in the United Kingdom. It was written by William J. Kirkpatrick and was first published in 1895.

Away in a manger è un celebre canto natalizio, le cui prime due strofe sono state pubblicate per la prima volta nel 1885 da James Ramsey Murray in una raccolta statunitense di inni luterani con il sottotitolo Luther's Cradle Hymn, vale a dire “Ninna nanna di Lutero, circostanza che per molto tempo ha fatto a lungo ritenere che si trattasse di un adattamento di un inno da attribuire a Martin Lutero. A questo testo è stata poi aggiunta una terza strofa nel 1905, attribuita al newyorkese John Thomas McFarland.
